A man was airlifted to hospital after suffering a serious injury in a fall from height in Lincolnshire this week.
He was found conscious but in need of urgent care.
The on-call EMICS team, Dr Simon Topham and Paramedic Roger Linnell, arrived within minutes in the Fast Response Vehicle (Critical Care Car), just two minutes after the EMAS ambulance crew.
Dr Simon Topham, who has been responding with EMICS since January 2025, said:
“An early deployment of the EMICS team to scene led to recognition of a significant injury, which made a real difference.
“As the senior doctor on scene, I made decisions about bringing in the right support. It was a complex trauma and needed a joint response.
“It took teamwork between ambulance, fire, and air assets to get this patient safely out and safe onward clinical journey.”
Due to the complexity of the injury, Fire & Rescue were called to support a careful rescue.
Strong pain relief was given, and rescue teams worked to cut around the injury before the patient was flown to the nearest Major Trauma Centre for further treatment.
Without the early, senior clinical decision-making provided by EMICS, the outcome could have been very different.
EMICS doctors and paramedics volunteer their time to bring hospital-level care to patients, often making life-changing and and life-saving interventions.
This incident highlights the critical role of early specialist input and the value of supporting EMICS, so we can continue to respond when every second counts.
