BBC Leicester Breakfast Show: Hear how EMICS doctor saved Peter’s life

Listen now to a story of courage, survival, and the extraordinary work of our volunteer doctors. EMICS (East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme) has been saving lives for over 40 years, and in that time, we’ve treated more than 50,000 patients in their most critical moments. One of those lives saved was Peter’s.

Listen to Peter’s full story and Dr. Woods’ interview on BBC Leicester Breakfast Show, where they share more about the incredible work EMICS does and the lives they’ve touched. Timestamp: 1.12 – 1.20.

On the morning of the Leicester 10K, Peter, a healthy and active 64-year-old, suddenly collapsed from a cardiac arrest mid-race. Other runners immediately rushed to his aid, but it was EMICS volunteer Dr. Matt Woods who stabilised him at the scene, giving Peter the care he needed to survive.

Today, Peter is alive and well – thanks to the efforts of Dr. Woods and the quick action of bystanders. Reflecting on the life-saving care he received, Peter expressed his gratitude not just for Dr. Woods but also for the many people who played a part in his recovery.

“There were so many people involved in saving my life—Dr. Woods, the paramedics, the doctors, the nurses. I can’t express how thankful I am.”

Dr. Woods and the EMICS team work tirelessly as volunteers, providing vital pre-hospital care across the East Midlands, often in partnership with paramedics and other emergency services. While air ambulances are more visible, EMICS doctors provide a the same critical service, arriving at the scene of emergencies to deliver advanced medical interventions that save lives.

But none of this would be possible without your support. As Dr. Woods pointed out:

“Everything we do is funded by public donations. We volunteer our time, but we need the resources to keep saving lives.”
